As part of the Magnolia School District Arts Integration Program, first-grade students have been communicating folk stories through dance. Lessons are taught by Aman Dance teaching artists from Segerstrom Center for the Arts. During this rich, interactive program, students work together to learn dance and movements in the style of “Western Highlife,” a popular West African style of dance that is a dynamic process of storytelling. This eBook presentation entitled “Dances of West Africa” was developed by Baden-Powell students in Yvonne Morrison’s first-grade class to share their experience.

Tuesday, December 15th, Baden-Powell parents were invited to have "Coffee with a Cop."  About thirty-five parents came to take advantage of this time to get to know local police officers, and to be able to ask them anything.  Six officers from the Anaheim Police Department came to Baden-Powell and brought coffee to share.  The officers represented different divisions of the police department and each described a bit about their division.  The officers also described various programs that the police department offers to students and to the community.  The officers in attendance each focus their work on the west side of Anaheim.

After the introduction, parents were then able to ask the officers anything.  Many of the questions were about safety at school and in the community.  Following a formal time of questions and answers, the officers made themselves available to parents individually so they could ask questions about specific situations.

The parents appreciated the time from the officers and were grateful to make the personal connection with the officers.  We are thankful for the support of the Anaheim Police Department for this time for coffee with a cop.
