Attendance Information
Magnolia School District Attendance Policy
The Governing Board believes that absenteeism, whatever the cause, may be an early warning sign of poor academic achievement and may put students at risk of dropping out of school. The Board desires to ensure that all students attend school in accordance with the state’s compulsory education law and take full advantage of educational opportunities provided by the district. Did You Know?
- Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
- Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college. (Credit: Attendance Works)
Attendance Procedures
When a Student is Absent
When a student is absent from school, the parent/legal guardian is required to notify the school office on the day of the absence. There are several ways parents can notify the school of the reason for an absence:
- Call the office at your child’s school and inform the office staff and or health clerk with the following information: name of person reporting the absence and relationship to the student, student name, teacher name, date(s) of absence, reason for absence.
- Send an absence note when your child returns to school. Include name of person reporting the absence and relationship to the student, student name, teacher name, date(s) of absence, reason for absence.
- Respond to ParentSquare attendance notifications.
Please carefully read the sections pertaining to attendance in the Parent/Student Handbook for the current school year. Our District’s policy is that we may require verification of absences by a school official or physician if absences for health reasons appear excessive. Also, familiarize yourself with your child’s school calendar so you may avoid scheduling family trips and appointments during school time. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your school principal.
