Over the last year, Magnolia School District has been working with ENGIE Services U.S. to develop and deliver a comprehensive energy efficiency program. This includes large-scale infrastructure improvements, including reducing energy consumption through efficient lighting, thermostat, and air-conditioning systems, as well as providing clean on-site renewable solar power by installing solar shade structures on all District campuses and our district office and warehouse. In addition, students are receiving enriched educational experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) through a hands-on learning program related to energy and the environment.

On Saturday, May 19th, 2018 Success Through Chess hosted the 7th annual Magnolia School District chess tournament at Baden-Powell School. The day was filled with concentration, focus, tears, cheers, as students played individually for the first part of the day, then team chess or “bughouse” with their classmates against other District students!

Three Magnolia School District Students received top honors at the Anaheim Beautiful Community Pride Poster Contest. Elias Leon III, 1st Grade from Dr. Albert Schweitzer; Kassandra Prieto, 5th Grade from Dr. Peter Marshall and Arlette Florencio, 6th Grade from Esther L. Walter were recognized at the Anaheim City Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 15th and received a family four pack of Disneyland Resort Park Hopper tickets.

Magnolia School District students were really excited to welcome graduating seniors from Magnolia High School to a “Senior “Walk” at their schools on Monday, May 21. The seniors donned their caps and gowns for a brief “parade” through Maxwell, Salk, and Walter Schools, along with the accompaniment of the skilled musicians in the Magnolia High School drumline.

On May 17th, Board of Trustees recognized the Magnolia School District’s 2018 Employees of the Year. Mrs. Sherrie Todorovic was selected as the Certificated winner, Mr. Miguel Beltran was selected as the Classified winner, Mr. Richard Schwartz and Mrs. Annette Cleveland were selected as the Administration winners.

On May 10, Magnolia School District celebrated our dedicated staff members at the annual “Years of Service” Recognition ceremony and reception. Employees who reached their 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th year and 2018 retirees were honored. Together, these outstanding employees have contributed a total of 2,286 years of commitment and service to our District.

We are proud to announce that Magnolia School District staff members were honored at the 2018 Orange County Music and Arts Administrator Awards! Highlights of the evening included Mrs. Barbara Quintana, Board Member, receiving the Orange County Arts Advocate Award, Dr. Frank Donavan, Superintendent, receiving the 2018 Arts on the Rise Award, Steve Pescetti, Principal receiving the Outstanding School Administrator Award, and Marta Mora-Ratkay, Teacher, receiving the OC Arts Award for Theater. These staff members were honored for their outstanding leadership and support of the Arts. The event took place on May 9th at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in the Samueli Theater.

Students submitted their artwork and others performed as part of the VSA Opening Ceremonies. Students from Baden-Powell and Salk Elementary Schools were featured in the Opening Ceremony of the VSA Festival Saturday, April 21st. Two groups of students, supported by their teachers and other staff members, performed for the large crowd of parents, community partners and the general public at the Mall. Both dance numbers were a huge hit with the audience and students were excited to perform and receive the well-deserved attention.

Jake Chao, a senior at Oxford Academy, and a team of high school students from Orange County created a program entitled “Young Acoustics.” They created the program to bring free music classes to students in elementary school. Recently, Jake was awarded the Disney Dreamers and Doers Luminary Award and $3,000 to donate to a non-profit organization of his choosing. He chose Magnolia School District as the recipient to continue music instruction for students.

On Thursday, May 10 Stacey Kraack and Mirna Colocho were recognized at the 6th Annual Language Learner Celebration, recognizing individuals from districts across Orange County who have improved opportunities and outcomes for English learner students. The event took place at the Marconi Automotive Museum in Tustin.
